Portia Malapane and Joy Seerane obtained first prize and are current champions in the Solo Soprano and Mezzo soprano in the current standings at the South African Tertiary Institutions Choral Associations (SATICA) and have also done well during the National Choir Old Mutual Choir Competitions. They were hosted by OBU in the Fine Arts Faculty led by Dr Christopher Mathews, after his successful visit to the University of Limpopo and invited the two students for a formal music and academic experience in Oklahoma. They successfully left South Africa on April 17 and arrived in Oklahoma on April 18, 2018 to start their music and academic experience. They interacted with students, staff, university leaders, university management members, and even met the University President (Photo above). They receive personal voice training sessions with seasoned music professors and also performed South African music in front of staff and students. Portia Malapane is a 3rd year student in the School of Education while Joy Seerane had just graduated in Bachelor of Arts (Administration) a few days before departure. They both visited the School of Education and School of Arts as part of envisaged long-term aspirations to have students study at OBU on a long basis either for undergraduate or postgraduate studies across all faculties especially in programs not offered at UL. It is hoped that this journey will open more doors of interactions between the two institutions and raise the bar of academic excellence higher. We will seek more funds for a bigger group and more students to follow suit.
