SHALATI JOSEPH KHOSA’s musical
journey and philosophy share striking similarities with those of WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART. As the life of SJ Khosa unfolds we learn that, like
Mozart, he composed his first music at the tender age of 5 years. Similar to
Mozart, who was taught music by his own father, Leopold, SJ Khosa also grew up
in a musical family under the guidance of his father, Risimati, who was a
church choir master and a prolific composer. Just like Mozart who lost his job
while visiting his family, when SJ was visiting overseas when he lost his job
at home, hence the penning of Mintirho ya
vulavula. Mozart expressed himself so well in his music that most people
believe that his last Requiem was
based on his own life and what he thinks of the after-life. In a similar
fashion SJ wrote some of his music about his own experiences and thoughts of
the world to come. The parallels drawn
culminate in SJ Khosa ultimately reaching Austria, Mozart’s birth place,
learning much of the paths walked by Mozart and learning much of his music
including the flawless orchestrations Mozart is known for. This concert draws
these parallels and celebrates the melodies of WA Mozart alongside SJ Khosa.
